NMIT students praised for ‘extraordinary quality’ work on feature film project

NMIT students have received high praise for their “extraordinary” visual effects work on a feature film project.

Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) and Animation students and NMIT tutors Neil Benson and Jacob Barrow helped with post-production on Northspur, a feature-length film being made in Marlborough.

The invaluable real-world industry experience saw them collaborate with a company that’s produced work for Netflix, HBO, Amazon Studios, and blockbuster films.

“It was an extraordinary opportunity to be able to work on a feature film with the CGI/Animation students. This opportunity has pushed everyone to another level,” Neil says.

“Seeing the growth in their technical abilities and watching them meet the standards required of a professional organisation was an incredible experience.”

Northspur(external link) is about a peace-loving man in a violent, post-apocalyptic world who is forced to find life-saving drugs for his wife. But to get them, he must first help an old man defend his cabin against nefarious forces.

The students helped to add visual effects into the movie, including muzzle flashes, bullet hits, grenade explosions, wounds, and complicated paint outs.

Northspur producers Aaron Falvey and Justin Eade said the students produced work of an “extraordinary quality” that far exceeded their expectations.

“They went above and beyond, working late and long hours to meet difficult deadlines, and showed a level of maturity and skill well beyond their years.

“These students will be well-equipped to go out into the workforce with this real-world experience and our movie is significantly enhanced because of all their incredibly skilful work.”

CGI student Sarah Wallace says the experience helped to accelerate her learning and gave her a taste of what working in the film industry is like.

“I'm so incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work on this project and it has given me determination to continue improving my skill set and work harder towards a career in the industry.”

Neil says that NMIT has forged new relationships with leading visual effects companies as a result of working on the film, which will benefit the CGI/Animation programme going forward.

Northspur is scheduled to come out later in the year, but NMIT students and staff will get a private screening to see their handiwork prior to it being released.
