Aquaculture students care for baby salmon

Aquaculture students look after baby salmon as part of their studies.

Newly hatched hāmana (Chinook Salmon) are called Alevins and are born with yolk sacs which provide the necessary nutrients for growth. This means that baby salmon don’t feed for the first few weeks of life!

This young salmon from our Aquaculture Programme is coming out of the Alevin life stage and has just about used up its yolk sac.

The salmon are just beginning to develop the iconic colours and patterns we know well.

Baby salmon of this stage are referred to as fry or “parr”.
